DAY 02 - SHINGU, JAPAN

A small coastal town of 30,000, Shingu is home to Kumano Hayatama Taisha Shrine, a UNESCO-designated treasure and one of three sacred sites along the ancient pilgrimage routes of Kumano Kodo, leading to and from Shingu. The striking red and white architecture has called to pilgrims for centuries and continues to leave travelers with a sense of awe in this tranquil setting. Despite its proximity to Kagoshima, Yoron sports clear influences from nearby Okinawa, and a beautiful harmony between the old and new. Besides the spectacularly blue waters that beckon to swimmers, Yoron’s proudest site is the Folk Village, which preserves the ancient ways of crafting and creating to continue the practices for generations to come.

Sea life is celebrated here, as Motobu is home to some of Japan’s best beaches and swimming areas, as well as Churaumi Aquarium, the world’s largest private aquarium. Comprising more than 204,5000 square feet, Churaumi is filled with majestic creatures from the deep, including giant whale sharks, bull sharks, manta rays, and thousands of tropical and deep-water fish. Head to Emerald Beach for infinite views of the macrocosm of the aquarium in the ocean beyond.

DAY 12-13 - NAHA, OKINAWA, JAPAN

A cosmopolitan hub full of energy, Naha is the capital of the Okinawa prefecture, boasting influences of ancient Japanese traditions and more recent evidence of international visitors. Explore the urban jungle of Kokusai-Dori’s shopping and dining, including the fusion cuisine that is unique to Okinawa, evolved from decades of western occupation (taste the taco rice, champura and soki soba). Naminoue Shrine offers a glimpse into Okinawan mythology, while Gokokuji Temple tells dramatic tales of controversial settlers.ons.

The seas surrounding these islands, located about 20 miles from Okinawa, are a window to the wonders below, astoundingly transparent and reflecting nearly neon hues in the sunlight. Watch for migrating humpback whales who also favor the warm waters among the islands for their annual breeding grounds.
