Agrigento, Sicily, Italy |
|
|
Agrigento has a history dating back to the 6th century BC, when the original city of Akragas was founded. That city reached its height under the tyrant Theron in the 4th century BC. Around 430 BC was built the Temple of Concord, the best preserved architectural masterpiece in the Valley of the Temples. The city was fought over by the Romans and Carthaginians, invaded by the Vandals and Goths, ruled by Byzantium, by Arabs, and by Normans. During Arab domination, the city was called Girgenti, a name it kept until 1927. Fine wines are today produced in the Valley of the Temples. Agrigento, due to its historical and artistic heritage, is the province that best represents Sicily's transition from the ancient to the modern. |
