Angkor Wat, Cambodia |

Believed to be the funerary temple of King Suryavarman II, and built over a 30-year period in the 12th century, Angkor Wat is the best known and the largest of over a hundred major temple sites located near Siem Reap that were built in brick and stone by a succession of Khmer Kings between the 9th and 13th centuries. Angkor was the capital of the Ancient Khmer Empire, founded in the 9th century by King Jayavarman II. The city reached its peak glory in the 12th Century under Kings Suryavarman II and Jayavarman VII. Angkor Wat, lies about one kilometer south of the royal town of Angkor Thom, which was founded by Jayavarman VII. The site is about one square kilometer and is comprised of innumerable bas relief carvings, all surrounded by a 190-meter-wide moat. When the Khmer empire declined, Angkor Wat was preserved as a Buddhist temple. Having originally been dedicated to the Hindu God Vishnu, the temple illustrates some of the most beautiful examples of both Khmer and Hindu art, including the longest continuous bas-relief in the world, which runs along the outer gallery walls, narrating stories from Hindu mythology. |
