From Naples, visitors can explore
the rugged Amalfi coast, Italy's most romantic stretch of coastline.
The winding roads of Amalfi hug the rocky mountainside and offer spectacular
views of azure sea below. Near Amalfi is the tiny resort of Positano,
where visitors enjoy strolling through the streets and shopping in the small
boutiques.
Another highlight of a visit to Naples is an excursion to
Pompeii, covered and preserved by the debris from Mount Vesuvius in
79 A.D. Please Note: Do not wear
expensive jewelry or carry a large amount of cash. Cross the streets in
Naples with great care.
Pier Information
Naples is a place to take a tour. Although Naples has some points of
interest, if you have never seen Pompeii, Positano, or Capri, take an
excursion to one of those. Pompeii involves quiet a bit of walking.
Taxis are generally available at the entrance to the terminal, a bit of
a distance.
Shopping. Besides the Terminal Building, Via Roma and its
side streets are lined with shops offering leather articles, shoes,
men's and ladies' fashions, and jewelry. Coral jewelry, cameos,
Capodimonte porcelain, ceramic figurines, and articles made with inlaid
wood are among favorite buys.
Cuisine. Small restaurants and a number of
ornate 19th-century cafes located around the Galleria Umberto I and the
Piazza del Plebiscito offer culinary delights.
Other Sights Cathedral of San Gennaro. The head of Naples patron saint
San Gennaro is kept in a chapel dedicated to the saint, along with two
phials of his blood that miraculously liquefy three times a year. San Gennaro Catacombs. Among the Christian underground
burial vaults discovered in an area of suburban heights, the Catacombs
of San Gennaro can be visited. They feature extensive early Christian
mosaics and carvings, some dating back to the second century. Capodimonte Park. Here, the National Museum of Capodimonte
has five Caravaggios and works by Titian. One entire wing is filled with
18th-century figurines. The Royal Factory founded by the Bourbons still
manufactures these beautiful ceramic and porcelain figures today.
