Nesebur sits on a
small rocky peninsula connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus.
Remnants of the 2nd century city walls rise above the town, and the winding,
cobblestone streets are lined with stone and timber houses with wooden
stairways and jutting first floors. Another characteristic of Nesebur's
architecture is the horizontal strips of white stone and red brick offset by
striped blind arches resting on vertical pilasters, the facades highlighted
by ceramic discs and rosettes.
Pier Information. The ship is scheduled to
dock at Pier No. 1. The town Left is within easy walking distance from
the pier. Taxis are generally available.
Shopping. Typical purchases are embroidered
dresses and blouses, linens, carpets, local perfumes, and dolls in
national costume. There are good buys on pottery, leather goods, silver
filigree jewelry, and recordings of folk music.
Cuisine. Popular Bulgarian dishes are kebapche
(grilled meat rolls), kavarma (meat and vegetable casserole), sarmi
(stuffed cabbage leaves), and topcheta (a creamy soup with meatballs).
Vegetarians should watch for dishes based on sirene (cheese). Sirene po
Shopski is cheese, eggs and tomatoes baked in an earthenware pot. A
Shopska salad is made of fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and peppers
covered with grated sheep's cheese.
Museum of Archaeology.
Located in the town Left, this recently opened museum houses a
fascinating collection of some 5,000 relics and finds that have been
salvaged from archaeological sites of the ancient town of Nesebur.
